Mumbai/UNI: A fire broke out on Monday at the top floors of the ground plus eight-storey GST Bhavan at Byculla in south Mumbai.

No casualty have been reported so far and further details were awaited, said the BMC Disaster Control Room.

However, reports claimed that several people have been feared trapped inside the building.

Around 16 fire engines and seven ambulances were deployed to battle the blaze, even as thick clouds of smoke billowed out of the upper two floors.

The flames started from the eighth floor of GST Bhavan and gutted the other floor as well.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reached the spot and supervised the rescue operation.

More than thousands of people were inside the building, when the inferno started, but all of them came out safely, said an eyewitness Sajid Qureshi.

Another witness Rahul Sharma said, "Small fire vehicles reached first, but they were of no use as the blaze engulfed the top floor. It came under control only after the arrival of fire brigade's 54 metre firefighting ladder."
