Pranab Mukherjee confers Padma awards New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee today conferred Padma awards on 66 eminent personalities at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Noted scientist Dr. Raghunath A. Mashelkar received Padma Vibhushan while classical singer Begum Parveen Sultana, actor Kamal Hasan, sportsperson Pullela Gopichand were among those who were honoured with Padma Bhushan. Devotees across the country converged on river banks and queued up at temples chanting hymns and offering special prayers. The festival lasts for nine days in honour of nine manifestations of Durga, goddess of power. Priests in Varanasi performed a yoga exercise, surya namaskar (sun salutation), to pay obeisance to Sun God on the auspicious festival. Former Pakistani President Musharraf ple Rawalpindi/ Islamabad, Mar 31 (ANI): A court in Pakistan indicted former president Pervez Musharraf for treason on charges relating to his 2007 imposition of emergency -- a crime that carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. The former military ruler pleaded not guilty to five counts of treason on Monday. Musharraf is accused of unlawfully suspending the constitution and instituting emergency rule in 2007, when he was trying to extend his rule as president. Judge Faisal Arab, who heads the special panel of three judges, rejected a defence plea for additional time. Road accident kills four IIT-Delhi stude Jaisalmer, Mar 31 (ANI): Four IIT-Delhi final-year students, who were on a road trip to Rajasthan to celebrate their placements, were killed and two other injured in a road accident as the vehicle carrying them overturned. The accident took place at around 2:00 pm near Jaisalmer district when the students were returning from a trip. The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. While three students died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. Al Qaeda’s roots growing deeper in Pak Peshawar, Mar 31: Dr. Shahid Afridi, who helped CIA to trace Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad in 2011 will now face a fresh probe for having foreign links. An appellate forum under the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FRC) has directed the Khyber Agency to prepare a case for his involvement in anti-state activities in collusion with foreign intelligence agencies, including CIA. It reflects Pakistan’s growing frustration for being exposed of sheltering al-Qaeda founder, Osama bin Laden, the perpetrator of 9/11 attack in which 3,000 people were killed. In June 2012, Dr. Afridi was convicted by a court in Khyber tribal region and sentenced for allegedly supporting the Lashkar-e-Islam militant group. Musharraf has been summoned to a Special Court set up to try him in a treason case for imposing emergency in the country in 2007.
