Police arrest 2 accused in gang-rape of Badaun, May 30 (ANI): Police on Friday arrested two of the suspects who allegedly gang-raped two teenage girls and hanged them from a tree in Uttar Pradesh. The two cousins, aged 14 and 15, who were from a low-caste Dalit community, went missing from their village home in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district when they went out to go to the toilet on Tuesday evening. The following morning, villagers found the bodies of the two teenagers hanging from a mango tree in a nearby orchard. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Badaun, Atul Saxena, said two of the suspects have been arrested and the hunt for the third one is still on. The post-mortem report confirmed the two minors were raped and died from the hanging. 30-May-2014

Two Indian-origin boys tie for Scripps N United States, May 30 (ANI): Two Indian-origin boys have been crowned the co-winners of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. For the first time in 52 years, two spellers have been declared co-champions. Sriram Hathwar, 14, of Painted Post, New York, and Ansun Sujoe , 13, of Fort Worth, Texas, shared the title after they spelled a dozen words correctly in a row. BSP Chief demanded a CBI probe into the gangrape and murder of two Dalit teenagers in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, saying there was absolutely no control over crime in the state. Shutdown call by TDS hits normal life in Andhra Pradesh, May 29 (ANI): Chief minister-elect of India's new state, Telangana, which will come into existence on June 02, K Chandrasekhar Rao, called for a shutdown on Thursday (May 29) to protest the move of the central government to issue an ordinance related to the merger of a few villages of Khammam district into Andhra Pradesh. The city wore a deserted look as shops and business establishments remained closed at many places, including Hyderabad. Bus services from Hyderabad to various destinations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh were also suspended. Health Minister's clarion call for stude New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, flagged off a rally of school students in New Delhi on Friday, a day ahead of 'World No Tobacco Day' to draw attention towards the health risks associated with tobacco consumption. The rally was part of the activities taken up by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the WHO, to mark the 'World No Tobacco Day' in order to promote the theme 'Raise taxes on tobacco to reduce tobacco consumption' for this year. Globally, every year, 31st May is observed as World No Tobacco Day. Interacting with participants of the rally, he said that the health ministry is working towards advocating policies that could help reduce tobacco- related health risks and ensuring at the same time that the laws implemented by the state governments are made people friendly. He further added that the rally is organized to spread awareness, especially among students, so that they come forward and campaign against tobacco in India. 30-May-2014

Chudasama said that Modi this morning called him to request that anything on a living person should not be included in school syllabus. Residents of Maoist-affected villages said they were expecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led union government to take concrete steps against Maoists in the region. People complained that the district was neglected during Congress party's regime and hoped for better future. Fire engulfs slum area in Bhopal Bhopal, May 30 (ANI): Raging inferno broke out in a slum cluster in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh on Friday gutting several hutments, police officials said. The blaze was reported at the slum in Bhopal around late night and around 8 fire tenders were pressed into service. The fire has now been brought under control and there are no reports of casualties. Cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, official added. Reportedly, major loss of property is expected due to fire. However, no loss of life has been reported so far. 30-May-2014
