Indian Navy gets new vice chief New Delhi, Mar 31 (ANI): Vice Admiral P Murugesan was accorded guard of honour in New Delhi as he took charge as the Vice Chief of Indian naval staff on Tuesday. As per reports, the Indian navy has undergone a rejig as part of which Vice Chief S Lanba has been anointed as chief of the southern naval command which was earlier designated to SPS. Cheema. The latter will now serve in western naval command. Murugesan, while briefing mediapersons after the ceremony, said that navy ships were sent to conflict-torn Yemen to evacuate stranded Indians. India on Monday sent ships to Yemen to evacuate more than 4,000 nationals, mostly nurses, who were caught up in the fighting. The two passenger ships, MV Kavaratti and MV Coral, left from the southern Indian port city Kochi. Bus owners suspend operations to protest Palamu, March 30 (ANI): Bus owners in Jharkhand have suspended their operations in the wake of assaults and extortions by banned Maoist rebels. Maoists have been regularly extorting money from bus drivers in several districts of the state with authorities failing to take any action. Those who have refused to pay extortion money are beaten up badly and their vehicles torched. Bus owners have refused to ply buses till the government assures police protection to them. As a result, services in major routes of Ranchi, Panki and Lesliganj have been badly affected. A local legislator of Panki district, Bidesh Singh, met the bus operators on Monday (March 30) and assured them of police protection. Eminent Educationist Madan Mohan Malviya New Delhi, March 30 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee awarded late eminent educationist Madan Mohan Malviya with India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, on Monday (March 30). The award was received by Malviya's relatives at the Presidential Palace, the Rashtrapati Bhavan, during the annual Civil Investiture Ceremony, in New Delhi. The ceremony, which also included other civilian honour to Indians and foreigners, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Home Minister Rajnath Singh among others. Malviya's grandson, Pradeep, said it was a great honour for the family to receive the award on his behalf. Born in 1861, Malviya was an educationist and politician, noted for his contribution in the Indian freedom struggle. He was also four time president of the Indian National Congress. But he is most famous for setting up the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi in 1916, an esteemed institution today. The BJP had for long been demanding "Bharat Ratna" for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who received the award last week, and Malviya. Meanwhile, Microsoft founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates and his wife Melinda were also awarded the Padma Bhushan, third highest award, for their social work. 30-Mar-2015
Ten killed as bus overturns in Jharkhand Garhwa, March 30 (ANI): Ten people died in a freak accident as a bus overturned after it lost control and fell into a gorge in Garhwa district of Jharkhand on Monday (March 30). Eight people died on the spot while another two died in Garwah's Sadar Hospital. The bus was on its way to Sasaram town in Bihar from Raigarh city in Chhattisgarh when the accident took place. An official at Sadar Hospital, Neelam, said the injured have been admitted to hospital for treatment. Firecracker factory blast in Visakhapatn Visakhapatnam, March 30 (ANI): Explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam killed seven and injured five. The victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to Seven Hills hospital. The reason behind blast is yet to be ascertained. The entire building went up in flames and people were trapped under the debris. District Revenue Officer, K Nageswara Rao, said that investigation was underway and further details were awaited. ABVP shutdown disrupts rail, road traffi Patna, Mar 30 (ANI): A shutdown call given by students' wing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), disrupted normal life in Bihar on Monday. The shutdown call was given by students against a previous protest, which was held on March 26, when police had baton-charged ABVP members protesting against brazen incident of cheating. Reportedly, 100 ABVP activists were injured in Thursday's protest as they pelted stones at police who in turn resorted to baton charging and tear gas firing to disperse the mob. ABVP activists blocked railway tracks and took to streets carrying saffron flags and shouting slogans against the state government. Indian nationals return home from strife Kochi/ Thiruvananthapuram, March 30 (ANI): India began evacuation of up to 500 nationals from the capital of Yemen on Monday (March 30), after four nights of Saudi-led air strikes against Iranian-backed forces whose advances forced the president to flee. An Air India Airbus A-321, with capacity to carry 180 passengers, flew on Monday morning from New Delhi to Muscat, Oman, and was awaiting clearance to fly on to the Yemeni capital Sanaa, a spokesman for the flag carrier said. India on Sunday (March 29) airlifted 80 nationals from Sanaa to Djibouti, on the opposite shore of the Gulf of Aden.
