People head to beaches in Chennai to esc Chennai/ Giridih, May 31 (ANI): Hundreds of people headed off to beaches in the capital city of Tamil Nadu to get respite from scorching heat on Sunday. Officials say 1,786 people have died in northern and southern India over the past week, with temperatures soaring over 49 degrees Celsius (117 Fahrenheit) in some parts and baking southern states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as capital New Delhi. Locals said gulping down water was the only way to beat the heat in Chennai where the maximum temperature was recorded at 38 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Meanwhile, intense heat also claimed the lives of two deer in Giridih district of Jharkhand on Sunday. Two deer which wandered to Doranda village from a nearby jungle in search of water were found dead by villagers early on Sunday, officials said. He added that the deer may have died due to dehydration and heart attack at seeing the villagers. Villagers said that the nearby forests have been dried up because of the intense heat, prompting many animals to wander into villages in search of water. 31-May-2015
US Secretary of State John Kerry stable Switzerland, May 31 (ANI): US Secretary of State John Kerry who was hospitalized following a bike accident in France on Sunday, is in a stable condition in a Geneva hospital, his spokesman said. Kerry met with an accident while bicycling near Scionzier, France and thereafter was transported via medical helicopter to a hospital in Geneva, where he is being examined. Kerry is stable and likely suffered a leg injury. He did not lose consciousness. Paramedics and a physician were on the scene with the secretary’s motorcade at the time of the accident. It was unclear how long he was expected to stay in hospital. But it has been confirmed he will call off the remainder of his four-nation trip and return to Boston. The Secretary of State often cycles while on his diplomatic trips. 31-May-2015
WHO praises Beijing as it sets to implem Beijing, May 31 (ANI): As world observed World No Tobacco Day on Sunday, the WHO praised Beijing city of China for banning smoking in public places from June 01, hoping that the award will encourage rest of China to follow suit. Beijing will implement China's toughest smoking ban starting from tomorrow, prohibiting smoking in all indoor public places, workplaces, and on public transportation. According to the ban, operators of businesses should discourage their customers from smoking, and ask those who refuse to leave or report them to the related authorities. Some operators say it will be hard to totally prohibit smoking as many customers would like to smoke in their separately reserved rooms, and forcibly discouraging them will cause loss of business. The ban states that violators will face fines of up to 200 yuan, a twenty-fold increase from the current 10 yuan penalty. Operators of business who fail to fulfill their responsibilities will be fined up to 10,000 yuan. 31-May-2015

Thousands participate in a cyclothon in Srinagar, May 31 (ANI): More than 2,000 cycling enthusiasts participated in a cyclothon held in Srinagar city of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. Called 'Pedal for Kashmir', the event was organised by the state police to promote sports among the youths. The event was flagged off by Director General of Jammu and Kashmir, K Rajendra Kumar. Kumar said the objective of the event was to involve local youth and connect with them. He added that various other sports events will be organised across the state to engage the youth. Home minister lauds security forces in i Jagdalpur, May 31 (ANI): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday (May 31) lauded the efforts of the state government and the security forces in tackling Maoist insurgency in Chhattisgarh. Singh, on a two-day tour to the state, was speaking in Jagdalpur city of Bastar district, considered a stronghold of the Maoist rebels. He added that the government was looking to accelerate development programs in the state. In his visit to capital Raipur city on Saturday (May 30), Singh had emphasised that development of Maoist insurgents-affected areas was one of the priorities of the government. Uttarakhand flood scam: RTI Activist say Dehradun, May 30 (ANI): A string of financial bungling has come to light through responses to RTI queries that were made with regard to 2013 Uttarakhand flood relief efforts. RTI activist Bhupender Kumar has revealed that officials supervising relief work after the floods in 2013, splurged huge amount of money. According to Kumar, when lakhs of people in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand went hungry during the 2013 disaster, officials of the state government were busy utilising Rs 7000 per day allowance given to them for supervising relief efforts. A normal daily day diet of these officials included mutton chops, chicken, milk and cottage cheese. Kumar also stated that a payment of Rs 98 lakh was made against refill of helicopter used the operation. 30-May-2015

Congress MLA's guards open fire at quarr Haridwar, May 30 (ANI): Congress MLA from Khanpur, Kunwar Pranav Champion, has allegedly got involved in a firing incident at Bishanpur Kundi village of Haridwar. Reportedly Champion's guards opened fire at a quarrying field for nearly half an hour and many rounds of fire were opened leading to many injuries. Police have taken cognizance of the matter and investigation is going on. Villagers alleged firing had been done by Champion and his supporters, who arrived in dozen-odd jeeps. They added that many rounds of firing took place and people are in a state of threat. As per Champion, he was on an inspection visit to the quarrying lots to gauge the illegal quarrying being done in the area. But he found that in veil of villagers, a mob, purportedly quarrying mafia, attacked his entourage and then his guards opened fire in defence. Notably, Champion has a controversial past and had fired openly at a dinner hosted by Cabinet Minister Harak Singh Rawat in September 2013 and also a hotel owner in Roorkee in 2012 after he was denied a room there. 30-May-2015

Monsoon was expected to arrive in Kerala on May 30 but it has missed its date and is reportedly expected to be delayed by a few days. India is expected to see below-average rains this year as the emergence of an El Nino weather pattern will likely cause dry spells across South Asia. The forecast for poor rains ahead of the June-to-September monsoon season has also raised concerns of droughts in India. El Nino is a warming of sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific which can prompt dry spells in certain areas and heavy rains in others. This week's heat wave, the deadliest in a decade, has exposed the vulnerability of people who work outside in extreme temperatures. Cabinet recommends re-promulgation of la New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): The Union Cabinet for the third time recommended re-promulgation of the Land Acquisition Ordinance on Saturday. The Cabinet gave approval to re-promulgate the land ordinance which will lapse on 3rd June. Union Cabinet's recommendation will be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee for its approval. Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Land acquisition ordinance was re-promulgated to maintain continuity, so that there is no disparity regarding compensation to farmer. Meanwhile, the Cabinet also approved the setting up of a committee headed by PM to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar nationwide. Mumbai Nurse Aruna Shanbaugs attacker fo Hapur, May 30 (ANI): Sohanlal Bhartha Valmiki who brutally assaulted Mumbai nurse Aruna Shanbaug, leaving her in coma for 42 years, has been traced to Parpa village of Hapur district near Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. Shanbaug died on May 18, years after being in a vegetative state caused by the brutal sexual assault by Valmiki, then a ward boy with KEM Hospital in Parel. However, Valmiki denied charges of rape and said he is innocent. Valmiki is working in NTPC Ghaziabad to earn livelihood for his family and lives with his in laws. The family members and the villagers claim that they never saw Sohanpal indulging in any wrong practices. Valmiki was not charged with rape or sexual assault but with attempted murder and robbery. After a seven-year jail term, he walked free in 1980. 30-May-2015

The Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, a group of around 20 students, was banned by IIT Madras after an anonymous complaint to Smriti Irani's Human Resource Development Ministry. Teenager dies after brutal assault in cu Mumbai, May 29 (ANI): In a shocking incident, a 17-year-old boy, who was arrested for theft, died in a hospital after he was allegedly assaulted brutally at a juvenile remand home in Matunga. The victim, identified as Amir Jamal Khan was admitted to Nair hospital on May 24 in a critical condition. NHRC recommends CBI probe in Chittoor en Chennai, May 29 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission has ordered CBI probe into the Chittoor encounter saying that it was a murder not encounter. NHRC member Justice D Murugesan said on Friday that the victims should be given due compensation. He also said that the NHRC teams have interacted with the witnesses and the village residents and the report says that the incident was not an encounter but a murder. Japanese, Australian envoys visit war ce Imphal, May 29 (ANI): Ambassador of Japan to India, Takeshi Yagi along with Australian High Commissioner to India, Patrick Suckling visited Imphal to attend the 71st anniversary of Battle of Imphal. The commemoration programme was observed at Maibam Lotpa Ching, also known as Red Hill, and was organised by Manipur tourism forum along with Second World War Imphal Campaign Foundation. The Battle of Imphal took place in 1944 in regions around the city of Imphal, from March until July, when Japanese troops poured over the border to strike at India. Fought over a vast area of jungle and mountain, it was marked by vicious hand-to-hand fighting. Lieutenant General William Slim's army of British, Indian, Gurkha and African troops fought in horrendous jungle conditions, turning the tide against the Japanese army in World War II. Meanwhile, Suckling said it's an honour to be called for the anniversary programme of a historic battle. PK Sinha appointed new Cabinet Secretary New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Pradeep Kumar Sinha was appointed the new Cabinet Secretary on Friday. Sinha will replace Ajit Seth who is completing his term next month. Sinha has been holding the post of Power Secretary since July 2013. He has earlier held the post of Secretary in the Ministry of Shipping, and has held several other important positions in the Union Government and the State of Uttar Pradesh. Pakistani flags waved at separatist lead Anantnag, May 29 (ANI): Supporters of Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah on Friday raised Pakistani flags at a rally in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. The rally was being held addressed by the separatist leader while the supporters were waving Pakistani flags. This is not the first instance of Pakistani flags being raised in Jammu and Kashmir. The repeated instances are taking place despite Centre's stern stand that waving of Pakistani flags will not be tolerated.
