Hindus throng banks of holy river of Gan Kanpur/Varanasi, Oct 1 (ANI): Hindus from across India gathered on the banks of the holy river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh to offer prayers to their ancestors during the 15-day long worship and remembrance period. In 'Pishach Mochan temple' of Varanasi city, people came from across the country to perform prayers for the peace of the soul of their relatives who die a premature death. The relatives donate clumps made with fruits after which they offer prayers to their ancestral gods. Hindus believe that their ancestors get salvation after performing the ritual during the fortnight-long period. Once the rituals are over in Varanasi, people move to Gaya in Bihar where they are asked to conduct further prayers for the ancestors. People also throng the banks of the holy river Ganges to perform prayers to offer water, fruits and food to ancestors through prayers. The ritual also known as Pitru Paksha is considered by Hindus to be inauspicious, given the death rites performed during the ceremony, known as Shraddh. Hindus consider the ritual of Shraddh by a son during this period as compulsory. The food offerings on this day are also special. The food is generally cooked in silver or copper vessels and served on a banana leaf or utensils made of dried leaves. 01-Oct-2015
