New Delhi/IBNS: As the world is marking World Environment Day on Friday amid COVID-19 outbreak, PM Narendra Modi  pledged to preserve the planet's rich biodiversity.

"On #WorldEnvironmentDay, we reiterate our pledge to preserve our planet’s rich biodiversity. Let us collectively do whatever possible to ensure the flora and fauna with whom we share the Earth thrive. May we leave an even better planet for the coming generations," the Indian leader tweeted.

World Environment Day is being celebrated on June 5 since 1974.

In 2020, the theme is biodiversity–a concern that is both urgent and existential. Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa–and now, a global disease pandemic–demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life in which they exist. Nature is sending us a message, as per World Environement Day website.
