Chennai, Sep 27 (IBNS): Police resorted to baton charge to restrain a section of irate AIADMK activists who tried to cross the barricade to get closer to the court area on Saturday before the wealth case verdict of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Hundreds of anxious AIADMK workers gathered close to the special court near the Bangalore Central Jail on the outskirts of the IT city.

Many of them were seen praying for their leader and bought sweets with a hope that the court would pronounce its verdict in favour of the AIADMK chief.

Many of the AIADMK leaders and ministers are also expected to be present at the courtroom in a show of support to their party supremo.

Amid tight security blanket around the area, Jayalalithaa reached the Bangalore court which is expected to decide the fate of the Tamil Nadu CM at 1 pm on Saturday. The case was filed in 1996 by her arch rival the DMK.

If convicted, Jayalalithaa may face up to seven years of imprisonment. She had already spent a few days behind the bars after she was arrested in the case about 18 years ago.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to accept the petition of a lawyer who wanted the verdict to be put off on grounds that it would cause major law and order problems in the state.
