Mohali, Nov 29 (IBNS): A defiant knock of 78 runs from Joe Root helped England scrap the overnight deficit and take lead, here on Tuesday, day four of the third Test match against India.

At lunch, England have put on 156 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their second innings, by virtue of which they lead India by 22 runs.

In the first innings, the visitors had scored 283 and India 417, which gave the hosts a lead of 134 runs.

Root departed three and a half overs before lunch, not before completing a fighting half century.

He stood tall even as the other end witnessed little resistance from the other English batsmen.

Ravindra Jadeja, who had earlier helped India secure a lead against England's first innings score with a well combined innings of 90, removed Root with a delivery that turned sharply.

The ball took the edge of Root's bat only for Ajinkya Rahane to complete a fine catch.

After a horrid last session yesterday, the English camp conceded another to the Indians, as they lost three wickets in the morning session on day four.

Gareth Batty was the first to depart for a duck, followed by Jos Buttler (18).

Buttler's run a ball innings consisted of a boundary and a maximum, but was short lived.

The home team, who have already take an a 1-0 lead in the five match series, will look to take the next three wickets quickly and bowl England out.

Haseeb Hameed (13) and Chris Woakes (1) are at the crease and will resume batting when play starts in the second session.
